Say No to Mechanic Shops!

People always want more bang for their buck, true or false? I am going to have to lean on the side that says true. A buddy of mine recently made a visit to a nearby mechanic shop for his routine maintenance. He needed an oil change, tire rotation and rest of his car fluids topped off. He was charged $95.98 for parts and labor. Now, if it were me his shoes, I would have been a little concerned. Unless I'm getting the best oil in the world, along with a whole car inspectopn, my tires rotated, and all my fluids (including gas) refilled, I would never pay so much. There are a few simple steps you can follow in order to do all this maintenance work yourself, and in the comfort of your own garage. You can find tips and tricks, along with videos and step by step instructions, all over the internet or in books from your local library. If you go to an AutoZone you can get all the necessary things you need for a cheap price, especially since this particular store has specials on oils every day. Not only does this save money, it also teaches you a great life skill for future use. The problem with going to mechanics shops is that they overcharge you for labor and parts. For example; oil which has been recycled and refined to reuse in the vehicles of their customers is what you are over-[ariying to be put into your car. So, next time your car needs work which does not require professional labor, save yourself a little money and do it yourself at home.

  1. Preston, so what you're saying here is change the fluids yourself, and then get the mechanics to do things that we just can't do, like tire rotation? I wonder how much that would save? Do a quick calculation and show us...show us the "green"!

  2. I could not agree more. I do all of my own minor maintenance. I have changed my own oil, brakes, rotors, water pump, rotated my tires, and vital fluid checks. It may be routine maintenance but it is what I know. If there is one thing that i hate most when it comes to cars is fuel pumps. Fuel pumps can be so difficult to change because fuel pumps have to stay pressurized or one bubble can spark a piece of metal and "KABOOM".

  3. I agree! I hate going to the mechanics shop because they are always trying to talk you into getting more than what you came for. Luckily my dad knows a ton about cars so I dont have to make the horrible trip to the mechanics shop unless I'm getting new tires and even then, I make him go with me because I have NO idea how to speak "car talk."
